Aston’s Army

They haven’t lost a swim meet since Ronald Reagan was President: 239 wins and still going strong. The Cheshire High School Girls’ Swimming and Diving team has won every regular season meet since 1986, setting a national record. Ed Aston has been coaching the Rams for 35 years, and while a lot has changed (6 Presidents), his philosophy has remained the same: he never cuts anyone who wants to swim. So if you can get through his grueling workout, you can swim for the state powerhouse. And amazingly, say his coaching rivals, even though he lets his weaker swimmers enter events, he still wins. His swimmers say their coach believes in every single girl and makes the weakest feel as important as the best. It’s this team mentality that fuels every victory. One of his former swimmers, whose daughter also swam for Aston, says the coach sends the message that “every kid counts… every practice matters.”
Coach Aston says it all comes down to one thing: practice makes perfect. His girls practice 6 days a week and even do full workouts on meet days – very unconventional, by any athletic standard. After all these years, Aston still continues the ritual of “the bible” – that’s his notebook containing the daily work-out that he leaves on the pool deck before every practice. Back in the 80s, when the streak started, “the bible” was handwritten – now it’s a computer print-out. Aston’s Army is a co-production between CPTV and Danolas Productions.
